People use simple text editors, like Notepad, whenever they have to large huge amounts of text and they don't want any automated features to get in the way. There are, of course, good alternatives to Notepad, which add a few good functions, but few of them can be compared to Left. This simple application, with a simple name, provides what is probably the simplest text editing environment. However, despite its bare-bone appearance, Left still comes with some interesting and smart features.

The application's components can be extracted from a ZIP archive, but when you run the main executable, it will have to unpack a few other files. It only takes a few seconds to have it up and running. You can use the application on any modern Windows platform, without installing any special tools or services.

The user interface is essentially a featureless dark-grey rectangle. There is no title bar, no buttons or anything else. However, you will notice that the text you write does not take up the entire window. There is also a column, on the left side, where you can have navigation markers, which can help you jump to a specific part of your text instantly.

Despite the minimalistic appearance of the user interface, Left has some interesting features to offer. You can perform various actions through a series of hotkeys or by typing in certain characters. For example, you can create markers, on the left side of the window, by typing "#", "##" or "--" at the beginning of a line. Additionally, you can use hotkeys to jump between markers.

Words you have typed previously or common words can be completed automatically, simply by pressing the Tab key, before finishing a word. This can be particularly useful if you have type a long word, that is difficult to spell. Another useful feature is the possibility of cycling through synonyms, for any word, just by pressing Shift+Tab.

A description of Left's functionality is loaded by default, each time you launch the application. You can find all the hotkeys and commands in this description. They aren't hard to remember and they can certainly make your work much easier.

There are very few text editors that are as simple as Left and the best part is that you still get a set of smart and useful features.

Pros

The application's appearance can't get any simpler. You can write text without any distractions. Despite its simple looks, the software still has some interesting features to offer.

Cons

The lack of Save, Open or New buttons can make things a bit confusing for beginners, who don't know the corresponding hotkeys.
